In Uganda, most children are orphaned as a result of HIV/AIDS. Furthermore, with rampant poverty, these orphans are unable to care for themselves. Elderly people over 68 are often left to care for them, but both are helpless. Orphans without HIV/AIDS are equally vulnerable children who need help. These children, in addition to being unable to raise school fees, are also unable to cover their basic needs: food, shelter, medical care, sanitary pads for older girls, and even companionship. Smile Home International was therefore founded in response to this problem these orphans face. The organization was created to give hope to these orphans, to find their tuition to pay for their education, to give them a sense of meaning in life. Feed them, not just any food, but a balanced diet that will give them resistance to disease. Also, find shelters where possible to give them a place to belong. Respond to your ailments/illnesses through medical care. These are just some of the programs we offer.

The organization, started in 2010 by Maishala Musisi, was an independent, non-profit, indigenous church-based charity to try to stem the tide of vulnerable/orphaned people in particular, and the spread of HIV/AIDS in general. These two factors had been the most frequent situations in which religious members came forward for counseling and prayer. It was discovered that the anticipated limits were exceeded by demand, as the need for services was growing at such an astonishing rate, across an area too wide for physical, financial, and human resources to handle. In light of this, and in anticipation of the future, due in part to the never-ending spread of AIDS and in part to the increase in extreme poverty and health issues, SHI transformed from a small church-based organization to a community-based organization. Since 2011, SHI has been a fully-fledged independent organization based in Bugiri, a town in eastern Uganda, about three hours from Kampala, the capital of Uganda. The Organization will continually have branches, as needs for HIV/AIDS awareness, health promotion, empowerment of widows, youth, children, and vulnerable communities may arise from time to time.
